The History of the Arcade Machine

The History of the Arcade Machine

The arcade machine used to be a popular form of games hardware until recent years where coin operated machines are not really played as much anymore and arcades themselves are not as popular as they once were. This sudden decline of popularity was most likely due to an increase in technology with more capabilities of pushing to the home video games consoles we have today. Popular arcade games include the Street fighter series pong. Similar famous games such as Space invaders, Tetris and Pacman became one of the symbols of computer gaming and arcade games such as these certainly improved upon some of the already existing arcade games.

For instance, Space Invaders and Pacman had High scores to there game this drastically improved the popularity of the games and these games definitely influenced the competitive scene of gaming. Players wanted to beat their friends who were higher on the high scores. Pacman and Tetris have been revolutionary, for one Pacman was the first character with their own name. Tetris was also one of the first genuine puzzle games.

Street fighter also had multiplayer which was huge for social interaction in terms of gaming. This was huge in terms of social gaming and definitely influenced some other multiplayer games in the industry. Street fighter is still today a competitive scene within the industry and was even one of the very first eSports game series.

In 1979 asteroids was released in arcades. This game was ahead of it's time featuring a vector based graphics system. This probably made lots of games use this kind of system and keep improving upon it, asteroids was also a very competitive scene. People thought of it more than a game and rather a competition with friends, Asteroids was a really important game that definitely defined what a game meant to be competitive back then and even impacted some games now.

Pinball machines are different to arcade machines because they're a form of physical entertainment instead of digital entertainment. Whilst this is true they still adopted the high scores from some of the other arcade games and these were just as much a social aspect as the other digital arcade games. Today, popular pin ball machines have been recreated as digital games for mobile and console platforms, this shows us how they have influenced the video game industry.
